Course Title: Communicating with the Public: Warning and Informing
Who Should Attend: This course is aimed at staff within Category 1 responders, particularly emergency planning officers and communication officers, who are responsible for developing and maintaining a strategy to communicate with the public prior to, during and following an emergency.
Aim: To assist participants in their development of a strategy for communicating with the public in all phases of an emergency.
Objectives: By the end of the event delegates will be able to:
- describe the warning and informing duties in the CCA and the associated guidance
- identify the information needs and communication barriers of various communities
- evaluate approaches to manage the provision of information to the public
- design a relevant message campaign
- outline an education programme
- evaluate examples of warning and informing practice
- develop the outline of a warning and informing strategy
Pre-Requisites: Participants will usually have attended the Introduction to Civil Protection (ICP) course for a foundation in the Civil Contingencies Act and Integrated Emergency Management. However, delegates with appropriate experience should consult the attendance policy for information on exemption from ICP.
