Course Title: Geographic Information
Systems: Applications in Integrated Emergency
Management
(a joint initiative between the EPC, Leeds
University and the Ordnance Survey)
Who Should Attend: This course is intended (a) for
civil protection staff who need to gain an understanding and experience of
GIS to evaluate its relevance to their professional role, and (b) for GIS
staff who need to understand civil protection requirements and specific
technical and application issues in that context. Staff from these two
groups within a single agency are encouraged to attend together.
Aim: To provide those responsible for supporting or
making decisions in Integrated Emergency Management with an appreciation of
the gains of applying GIS and guidance on how to develop a system to
realise those gains.
Objectives: By the end of this event you will be able to:

Understand the significance of geographical information for decision
making throughout Integrated Emergency Management

Critically evaluate the state of data and information sharing for
enhanced decision making in your local context

Apply GIS tools to support risk assessment, emergency planning, training
and exercising and emergency response and recovery

Tackle barriers to interoperability at the local level, both within and
between organisations
Pre-requisites: Some knowledge of the Civil Contingencies
Act 2004 and associated civil protection duties is assumed and delegates
may benefit from attendance at Introduction to Civil Protection.
