Course Title: Communicating with the Public: Warning and Informing [NI]
Who Should Attend: This course is aimed at staff within Category 1 responders, particularly emergency planning officers and communication officers, who are responsible for developing and maintaining a strategy to communicate with the public prior to, during and following an emergency.
Aim: To enable participants to develop a strategy to meet the Civil Contingencies Act duties to raise public awareness and to warn and inform the public, prior to, during and following an emergency.
Objectives: By the end of the event delegates will be able to:
- Describe the Civil Contingencies Act duties to (a) raise public awareness of risks and (b) warn and inform the public in the event of an emergency.
- Identify linkages to other duties in the development of strategies and processes for informing communities.
- Evaluate strategies and processes for advising, warning and informing communities.
- Identify the information needs of various communities, and evaluate options to meet those needs.
- Establish barriers to effective advising, warning and informing and evaluate options to tackle them.
- Developing appropriate training & exercising to meet the requirements of the Act.
Pre-Requisites: Participants will usually have attended the Introduction to Civil Protection (ICP) course for a foundation in the Civil Contingencies Act and Integrated Emergency Management. However, delegates with appropriate experience should consult the attendance policy for information on exemption from ICP.
