Part of the Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards, the Division carries out the Health Protection Agency’s work on ionising and non-ionising radiations. It undertakes research to advance knowledge about protection from the risks of these radiations; provides laboratory and technical services; runs training courses; provides expert information and has a significant advisory role in the UK.

Through its own regulation and in partnership with other regulators and agencies, NSD aims to deliver a substantial reduction in nuclear industry precursor incidents, which are occurences having the potential to lead to an accident and seeks to meet HSC’s continuing aim to “ work to prevent catastrophic failures in industries which have the potential to cause significant harm.”

The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) has a very exclusive role. Positioned between providing protection for civil nuclear licensed sites and safe-guarding nuclear materials, nuclear site operators, policing and nuclear regulators as well as interlinking with Home Office forces, the CNC has a policing responsibility with a difference.
